One of the most beloved and debated symbols in Walt Disney World history made its return to Disney’s Hollywood Studios this morning, April 14, 2026, and Fantasy Land News was at the park at opening to see it firsthand. Mickey Mouse’s iconic Sorcerer Hat is back, and this time it is topping the building that will become The Magic of Disney Animation, the new experience opening this summer as part of a sweeping transformation of the Animation Courtyard into The Walt Disney Studios lot.

Walt Disney Imagineers installed the new Sorcerer’s Hat at Disney’s Hollywood Studios overnight, and guests arriving at park opening this morning were greeted by the sight of that unmistakable blue cone with the crescent moon and stars rising above the construction walls surrounding the former Animation Courtyard. We were standing there as the park opened and the moment hit immediately. The hat is hard to miss, and after more than a decade of its absence from the Hollywood Studios skyline, seeing it back is genuinely striking.
Disney made the reveal official this morning on social media, posting a photo of Imagineers gathered in front of the new hat with the caption: “How about a little magic @MickeyMouse’s sorcerer hat has arrived at Hollywood Studios.” Disney also confirmed that the newly reimagined area opens to guests on May 26, 2026, with The Magic of Disney Animation experience to follow in late summer 2026.

Why This Moment Matters: The History of the Original Hat? To understand why this return is such a big deal for Disney fans, you have to go back to 2001. The original Sorcerer’s Hat debuted on September 28, 2001, as the centerpiece of the 100 Years of Magic celebration, honoring what would have been Walt Disney’s 100th birthday. The 122-foot structure was built of steel and fiberglass and placed directly at the heart of Hollywood Boulevard in front of the Chinese Theatre, home of The Great Movie Ride. It quickly became the visual identity of the park, appearing on every map, billboard, and piece of merchandise, and becoming the go-to backdrop for family photos across generations of Walt Disney World visits.
Its placement was also its most controversial quality. The hat sat directly in front of the Chinese Theatre, blocking the sight line that Imagineers had originally designed when they built the park. For years, fans debated whether the hat was a bold statement of Disney identity or a piece of merchandise-driven theming that never really fit. Disney announced in October 2014 that the hat would be removed, and deconstruction began on January 7, 2015. By February 25, 2015, the hat was completely gone from the park.
From that day to this morning, the Sorcerer’s Hat was absent from Disney’s Hollywood Studios for exactly 11 years, 1 month, and 17 days.
Where the New Hat Lives and What It Means

This version of the Sorcerer’s Hat is not returning to Hollywood Boulevard. It sits atop the entrance to The Magic of Disney Animation, the upcoming experience that will occupy the former Star Wars Launch Bay building in the Animation Courtyard area. The new facade and hat are designed to mirror the actual Roy E. Disney Animation Building at Walt Disney Studios in Burbank, California, which has its own version of the Sorcerer’s Hat. That visual connection between the theme park experience and the real-world animation headquarters in California is central to the whole concept of this new land.
We watched the hat from the construction walls this morning and got a clear look at both the hat itself and the signage below it, which already features The Little Mermaid: A Musical Adventure branding. The construction walls along the walkway are decorated with concept art showing what the full Walt Disney Studios courtyard area will look like, with the hat prominently featured as the anchor of the reimagined space. If the concept art is any indication, the finished area is going to be one of the most visually distinctive spaces at any Disney park.
We recently covered the Disney animated character handprints and footprints installation happening nearby, which is also part of this courtyard transformation. You can read that story here: Disney Animated Character Handprints and Footprints Are Coming to Hollywood Studios.

What Opens and When
The Walt Disney Studios outdoor courtyard area opens on May 26, 2026. That includes the reimagined grounds, the Studio Theater continuing to host The Little Mermaid: A Musical Adventure, and the soundstage hosting the new Disney Jr. Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Live! show. The indoor Magic of Disney Animation experience, which will include character meets, and the Olaf Draws! animation class hosted by a new Audio-Animatronics figure, the Once Upon a Studio theater, an enchanted art gallery, and the Drawn to Wonderland playground for younger guests, opens in late summer 2026.
