The Lion King has roared back at the Box Office this past Holiday week. Beating out the strong competition from another gamer-friendly family movie “Sonic 3” and the lower-budget horror Dracula flick. Last week we wrote about the numbers and said at the time to not count out Mufasa: The Lion King from having strong numbers. The opening weekend numbers would not reflect the true box office smash it could turn out to be.
To celebrate and give a holiday gift as a thank you to fans, Walt Disney Studios released the full video and music for Mufasa: The Lion King song “I Always Wanted A Brother” which can be viewed at the link. The video is posted on the Disneymusic Vevo account.

“Mufasa: The Lion King,” explores the unlikely rise of the beloved king of the Pride Lands. Rafiki relays the legend of Mufasa to young lion cub Kiara, daughter of Simba and Nala, with Timon and Pumbaa lending their signature schtick. Told in flashbacks, the story introduces Mufasa as an orphaned cub, lost and alone until he meets a sympathetic lion named Taka—the heir to a royal bloodline. The chance meeting sets in motion an expansive journey of an extraordinary group of misfits searching for their destiny—their bonds will be tested as they work together to evade a threatening and deadly foe.
Miranda, who wrote original songs for “Mufasa: The Lion King” which is produced by Mark Mancina and Miranda, with additional music and performances by Lebo M, says he found an immediate connection with the story. “When I read the screenplay, I felt like the places where the songs needed to happen just popped out,” he says. “In fact, [for] at least a few of the songs, the titles of the songs I ended up writing were originally lines of dialogue in the screenplay. ‘I always wanted a brother’—there’s a line of dialogue—and I built the whole song around that title. I’m always looking to the screenplay for clues as to what want to sing.”
The film’s original score was composed by Dave Metzger. Nicholas Britell contributed to “I Always Wanted a Brother” and contributed several original score themes as well.
The film features an all-star roster of talent, including Aaron Pierre, Kelvin Harrison Jr., John Kani, Tiffany Boone, Kagiso Lediga, Preston Nyman, Mads Mikkelsen, Thandiwe Newton, Lennie James, Anika Noni Rose, Keith David, Seth Rogen, Billy Eichner, Donald Glover, Blue Ivy Carter, Braelyn Rankins, Theo Somolu, Folake Olowofoyeku, Joanna Jones, Thuso Mbedu, Sheila Atim, Abdul Salis, Dominique Jennings and Beyoncé Knowles-Carter.
Blending live-action filmmaking techniques with photoreal computer-generated imagery, the all-new feature film is directed by Barry Jenkins, produced by Adele Romanski & Mark Ceryak, and executive-produced by Peter Tobyansen. Featuring original songs by award-winning songwriter Lin-Manuel Miranda, original score by Dave Metzger, and additional music and vocal performances by Lebo M, “Mufasa: The Lion King” is in theaters now.
