Walt Disney World Turns 55 With More Development Underway Than Ever Before

Walt Disney World turns 55 today, October 1, 2026, and Disney is marking the anniversary with a look at just how much the resort has changed. More than 70 experiences have opened or been refreshed across Walt Disney World since 2021, which Disney describes as nearly a theme park’s worth of additions in five years, and the company says it has more development in the works right now than at any other point in its history.

What began in 1971 with one theme park, two hotels and a campground is now a destination spanning nearly 30,000 acres, with four theme parks, two water parks, Disney Springs, a sports complex and more than 25 resort hotels. The anniversary comes just days after the State of Our World event, where Walt Disney World President Joe Schott walked Central Florida leaders through the same growth story.

What Opened at Walt Disney World Since 2021 – Magic Kingdom added TRON Lightcycle / Run in 2023, Tiana’s Bayou Adventure and Critter Co-Op in 2024, and the Starlight: Dream the Night Away parade and The Beak & Barrel in 2025. Country Bear Musical Jamboree got a new show in 2024, and this year brought back Big Thunder Mountain Railroad and Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin, along with a refreshed color scheme for Cinderella Castle.

EPCOT saw the most change. Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure and Space 220 opened in 2021, Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind followed in 2022, and Journey of Water, Inspired by Moana and Luminous: The Symphony of Us arrived in 2023. CommuniCore Hall and Plaza opened in 2024, GEO-82 Lounge in 2025, Test Track was reimagined in 2025, and Soarin’ Across America took flight this year.

At Disney’s Hollywood Studios, Roundup Rodeo BBQ opened in 2023, followed by Disney Villains: Unfairly Ever After and The Little Mermaid – A Musical Adventure in 2025. This year alone brought Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring the Muppets, The Magic of Disney Animation, Disney Jr. Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Live! and a new mission on Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run. Disney’s Animal Kingdom added Zootopia: Better Zoogether! in 2025 and Bluey’s Wild World and Jumping Junction in 2026.

Disney Springs picked up Drawn to Life by Cirque du Soleil in 2021, Summer House on the Lake in 2023, and Level99, Six Ravens and Vans this year. On the resort side, Island Tower opened at Disney’s Polynesian Villas & Bungalows in 2024, The Cake Bake Shop and Hurly Burly arrived at Disney’s BoardWalk, and The Perch and the Garden View Tea Room opened at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa. Disney also says it has refreshed more than 18,000 resort rooms and 24 lobbies, including major lobby makeovers at the Grand Floridian and Pop Century, plus new cabins at Fort Wilderness.

Walt Disney World by the Numbers – Over the last ten years, Disney counts three new lands, more than 18 new attractions, four new resorts and resort additions, more than 25 new entertainment offerings and two new ways to get around property. That ten-year window covers Pandora at Animal Kingdom, Toy Story Land and Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Hollywood Studios.

The Themed Entertainment Association ranks Walt Disney World as the largest and most visited theme park destination in the world. The resort has more than 150 rides, live shows and character experiences, more than 29,000 hotel rooms and over 675 shops and eateries. About 80,000 Cast Members work there, and full-time Cast Members average 12 years on the job, which Disney says is three times the national average. Disney also plans to create 5,000 new jobs over the next five years.

The numbers reach well past the parks. Disney cites $40.3 billion in economic impact across Florida from a fiscal 2022 Oxford Economics study and says one of every 32 jobs in the state can be attributed to Disney. The company reports $37 million in financial and in-kind donations to nonprofits, schools and children’s hospitals, one million VoluntEAR hours from Cast Members over the last five years, and $5 million raised for Florida wish kids through the Walt Disney World specialty license plate.

What’s Coming Next at Walt Disney World – Several of the biggest projects are on track for 2027. Monstropolis at Hollywood Studios opens its theater show, dining and merchandise shop next year, with the Door Vault coaster following later. Tropical Americas brings Encanto and Indiana Jones attractions to Animal Kingdom in 2027, and the Encanto casita is already rising out of the old DinoLand footprint. Disney’s Lakeshore Lodge opens July 1, 2027 on Bay Lake, with reservations opening in phases starting October 6.

Magic Kingdom is in the middle of the largest expansion in its history, led by Piston Peak National Park in Frontierland and Villains Land beyond it. Neither has an opening date yet, but Imagineering has already been balloon testing the height of Piston Peak to see how it sits in the skyline. Disney’s anniversary graphic also lists Walt Disney’s Carousel of Progress, a Spaceship Earth reimagining and Expedition Everest’s Yeti coming back to life on the horizon, along with room refurbishments at Disney’s Art of Animation Resort.

“As we celebrate 55 years, we’re proud of the incredible Cast Members who have shaped our story and excited about the opportunities ahead as Walt Disney World continues to grow. That growth creates opportunity across Central Florida, and it reflects our long-term confidence in this community and in the future of Walt Disney World.” Joe Schott, President of Walt Disney World Resort

Celebrating 55 Years From 10 Miles Away – We have lived in Central Florida for more than six years now, just 10 miles from the entrance to Magic Kingdom. We have covered Walt Disney World on a daily basis since 2020. That is not as long as some outlets, but it is long enough to understand the daily workings of the parks and how much it takes to keep a resort this size running every single day.

We still love Disney, and we have a lot of respect for the work that goes into it. We see the construction firsthand and watch the progress on each new land as it happens, and we are just as excited now as we were when we started.

We watched TRON Lightcycle / Run go from an empty patch of land to opening day, and we still love riding it. We followed Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser from beginning to end. Now we get to watch four new lands being built at once with Piston Peak, Villains Land, Monstropolis and Tropical Americas, all while Walt Disney Imagineering keeps updating the rides and attractions already in the parks. The first 55 years feel like just the beginning. If we are lucky enough to be around 45 years from now, we would love to see how much the parks have changed by the 100th anniversary. We also can’t wait to see how much stays the same.

We will be at the Magic Kingdom this morning, and we will be at Disney’s Contemporary Resort on October 4 for the D23 Spotlight Series: 55 Magical Years of Storytelling, where the Walt Disney Archives and Imagineers are set to share new finds from the Carousel of Progress refurbishment.
