What’s Happening at Magic Kingdom Right Now
Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin reopened at Magic Kingdom on April 8, 2026, after a refurbishment that began in August 2025. The recharged attraction features new handheld blasters with an always-on laser and haptic vibration, fully rebuilt interactive targets that light up when hit, an all-new ride vehicle, and a new Star Command support bot named Buddy, who guides guests through target practice before launch. For the first time, guests receive Disney PhotoPass images showing their final score and rank after the mission ends.

Cinderella Castle is wearing its new classic color palette following a full repaint that began in January 2026. The updated look features deep saturated blues on the turrets, grey and cream stonework, and gold accents on the spire tips — a return to the castle’s original regal appearance after years of the 50th anniversary pink paint. Fantasy Land News was at Magic Kingdom firsthand during the repaint and has documented every stage of the transformation.

Magic Kingdom Cool Kids’ Summer 2026
Cool Kids’ Summer launches at Magic Kingdom on May 26, 2026, and runs through September 8. The season brings several new and returning experiences to the park. Starting May 26, Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, Daisy Duck, Goofy, and Pluto gather in Town Square and around the castle hub in new summer outfits for the Greeting Committee, a morning character experience timed to Early Park Entry for Disney Resort hotel guests.
Also opening May 26 is Jessie’s Roundup: A Rip-Roarin’ Revue at the Diamond Horseshoe in Frontierland, a Cool Kids’ Summer-exclusive live show featuring Jessie, Woody, Bullseye, and other Toy Story characters with songs, dances, games, and audience participation. Big Thunder Mountain Railroad completes its full refurbishment and returns in early May 2026 with new effects and a complete exterior refresh, before Cool Kids’ Summer officially begins.

Villains Land at Magic Kingdom
Villains Land is the most significant expansion in Magic Kingdom’s history, located Beyond Big Thunder Mountain in a new area that will eventually connect with Frontierland. The land was first announced at D23 2024 and is themed around Disney Villains summoned from every realm by a mysterious spell — a design aesthetic Imagineers call Conjured Architecture, inspired by Art Nouveau design from France and Spain.
The confirmed villain roster includes the Queen of Hearts, Jafar, the Evil Queen, Lady Tremaine, Yzma, Cruella De Vil, Captain Hook, Maleficent, Gaston, Mother Gothel, Ursula, Hades, and the Chernabog. Disney Legend Andreas Deja, the animator behind Jafar and Scar, is consulting on the project.
In February 2026, reports emerged that Disney had scrapped the original Villains Land plans in favor of a bigger and bolder vision designed to compete with Universal’s Epic Universe. Updated plans include a family coaster themed to The Emperor’s New Groove, a Maleficent dark ride, and a Hades-themed dining experience.

Piston Peak National Park — Frontierland Expansion
Piston Peak National Park is the Cars-themed land coming to Magic Kingdom’s Frontierland, replacing the Rivers of America and Tom Sawyer Island in the park’s largest single expansion ever. The land is inspired by the Disney and Pixar Cars universe and will feature two original attractions — a thrilling rally race around the park and a second family-friendly experience — alongside dining and shopping set within a fictional wilderness of towering trees, snowcapped mountains, waterfalls, and geysers.
Construction walls went up in Frontierland in 2025, earning the fan nickname Walltierland — a nod to the construction-era Wallcot nickname for EPCOT during its overhaul. The Liberty Belle Riverboat and Tom Sawyer Island have been removed to make way for the expansion.
Magic Kingdom History and Notable Stories
The draining of Cinderella Castle’s moat for the 2026 repaint revealed something unexpected on the moat floor — metal tracks that turned out to be remnants of the Plaza Swan Boats, a scenic boat ride that operated from Magic Kingdom’s opening through August 1983. Fantasy Land News covered the full history of the ride and what the tracks reveal about the park’s early years.
Court records obtained in early 2026 revealed that a Disney Imagineering executive testified in 2024 that Disney had been considering building one or two hotels inside Magic Kingdom as part of its expansion plans. Disney has since walked that back, stating there are no plans for hotels as part of the Magic Kingdom expansion.
