Movie theater popcorn buckets have had morning shows talking about them before, but nothing quite like this. During his September 17 appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Tom Cruise, IMAX, and Fallon gave every single person in the studio audience their own Digger boot-shaped popcorn bucket, filled with popcorn, in what may be the single biggest moment the popcorn bucket collecting world has ever gotten.
We’ve seen this trend get media attention before. Last year, Good Morning America and a handful of other morning shows started covering the bucket craze as a story in its own right, talking about the designs and the lines they draw at theaters. That coverage treated buckets as a curiosity to report on from the outside. This is different. Cruise, IMAX, and Fallon did not just talk about the bucket; they sent an entire studio audience home with one apiece. When arguably the biggest movie star working today, paired with a major exhibitor, puts a collectible directly in hundreds of hands on one of the most watched shows on television, that is not a theater chain’s marketing team pushing a novelty item anymore. That is a collectible getting validated by the exact kind of star power that used to have nothing to do with concession stand merchandise, and it is putting real Digger boot buckets into circulation two weeks before the film even opens.
The bucket itself is the one FLN first reported on September 14, still listed by Warner Bros. as “coming soon” with no confirmed price. Cruise’s appearance also included a human-sized “Claw Machine Challenge” against Fallon, complete with a hidden golden shovel as the instant win nodding to his character’s name, and Fallon surprising two audience members with tickets to see the film. The segment marked the first real footage released from Digger, showing Cruise transformed into Digger Rockwell. Those moments matter for the film’s promotional push, but they are not what makes this a story for collectors. The buckets that went home with the entire audience are.
It is hard to point to a comparable moment. Popcorn buckets have gone viral on their own plenty of times over the past couple of years, driven by fans in line at theaters and secondhand listings online, not by a star and a major exhibitor giving hundreds of them away in one taping. If this is the new bar for how far a studio will go to promote a bucket, expect every chain paying attention to take notice.
Digger opens in theaters and IMAX across North America on October 2. FLN is tracking every confirmed sighting of the boot bucket chain by chain on our Movie Theater Popcorn Buckets hub, including confirmations already in from Harkins, Regal, and Cinemark.
