The Walt Disney Studios Courtyard at Disney’s Hollywood Studios lit up in full last night for the first time, and Fantasy Land News was there to see it happen. The Sorcerer Hat’s pixie dust light show came back on after months dark, the trees throughout the courtyard were strung with warm white lights for the first time since the space opened in May, and the nighttime soundtrack swapped its daytime birds for crickets. All three pieces came together just three days before The Magic of Disney Animation officially opens on September 14.
We walked into the courtyard expecting the usual evening crowd noise and got something closer to a quiet escape instead. The oak trees scattered across the space were wrapped in warm white string lights from the lower branches all the way up, and with the courtyard’s mature shade cover, it felt less like a theme park walkway and more like a backyard patio somewhere. The Sorcerer Hat towered over all of it, glowing blue with its crescent moon and stars catching the light in waves. Below it, the silver ANIMATION lettering was lit up clean and bright against the red and white striped awning.
The hat’s lighting effect is not brand new. It first went up when the Sorcerer’s Hat returned to Hollywood Studios back in April, and it ran for about a week after the courtyard’s original May opening before the twinkle aspect went away for months. Last night marked its return, not its introduction, and the timing lines up with Disney bringing the last pieces of the courtyard online ahead of the official September 14 opening date.
The trees are the part that has not happened before. The courtyard’s trees were left dark when the space opened back in May, even as the Sorcerer Hat briefly ran its light show that same month. Last night was the first time we or anyone else has seen the trees lit from end to end, and it changes the whole feel of the space after dark. The lights are subtle rather than flashy, more like a string of fireflies caught in the branches than a light display competing for attention.
The courtyard’s ambient soundtrack also plays a part here. Once the sun goes down, the daytime bird sounds pipe down and crickets take over underneath the usual loop of classic Disney songs. That detail has technically been part of the courtyard’s sound design since May, but combined with the lit trees and the returning hat show for the first time last night, it landed differently. Standing there, it genuinely felt like stepping outside the park for a minute, which is a strange and welcome thing to feel in the middle of Hollywood Studios.
None of this looks like a coincidence. Disney has been finishing touches on the Walt Disney Studios Lot all week, from the new character statues added throughout the courtyard to Cast Member previews inside the building, which we got an early look at with our first look inside The Magic of Disney Animation. Getting the hat and trees both lit at the same time, three days out from the official opening, points to Disney wanting the full courtyard experience ready to go the moment the doors open.
Our take: This courtyard was already one of the better rethemes at Walt Disney World in daylight. At night, with the trees lit and the hat sparkling again, it turns into something else entirely. It is relaxing in a way that few spots inside a theme park manage to be, and it gives Hollywood Studios a second nighttime space worth slowing down in, alongside what Galaxy’s Edge already does after dark. If Disney keeps this lighting running consistently once The Magic of Disney Animation opens, this could end up being one of the most underrated corners of the park after sunset.
