Walt Disney Imagineering Reveals Hovering Star Wars Droid Cart for Galaxy’s Edge

June 26, 2026

Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge has spent the past few years slowly making good on a promise Disney made back in 2019, and a new Bloomberg report published June 26, 2026 shows that promise is about to expand in a direction nobody quite expected. The BDX droids, those small, bipedal, impossibly expressive little robots have already proven that free-roaming characters can survive the chaos of a crowded theme park. Now Walt Disney Imagineering is testing whether a robot can do more than just wander and wave. According to the new report, the next droid heading toward Black Spire Outpost might actually take your order.

Before getting into it, it’s worth being precise about what is and isn’t confirmed, because it’s easy to blur two different robots into one story. The BDX droids you might have already met near the Millennium Falcon are walking, two-legged characters built for atmosphere and interaction. The droid in this new Bloomberg report is a different platform entirely. It hovers rather than walks, and it’s designed around a food cart concept inspired by a food truck from The Mandalorian and Grogu. Imagineering showed Bloomberg a demo of the hovering cart, but it hasn’t appeared in any park yet. The plan, per the report, is to showcase it at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event in August 2026, with a possible Disneyland debut by the end of the year if testing goes well.

Per Bloomberg’s reporting, Imagineering is exploring a hovering droid built around a themed food cart that could eventually land in Galaxy’s Edge. The droid reportedly reacts differently depending on what a guest orders and “puts on a show” during the transaction rather than functioning like a standard vending kiosk. Kyle Laughlin, senior vice president for technology and R&D at Walt Disney Imagineering, framed the project as a test case for blending storytelling directly into retail. “I think that what we’re going to learn is how to show and sell products, and if it works, we’ll continue to look at new ways,” Laughlin told Bloomberg. He added that the concept isn’t limited to food and drink either, floating the idea of small merchandise like a toy as a future option. The cart was developed in collaboration with director Jon Favreau, which tracks given its design roots in The Mandalorian and Grogu. Laughlin also noted that Imagineering is mixing cutting-edge robotics with older techniques like puppetry and marionette work depending on what best serves the story, rather than chasing technology for its own sake.

Per Bloomberg, the hovering droid cart is expected to be showcased publicly at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event this August, with Imagineering eyeing a possible Disneyland debut by the end of 2026 if things go well there first. There’s no confirmed timeline yet for Walt Disney World, and Disney has not officially announced a launch date for either park. FLN will be tracking this one closely as more details surface.
