Opening Day Attraction Goes Extinct at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. A piece of Disney’s Animal Kingdom history went extinct tonight. The Boneyard, a popular dinosaur-themed playground and an opening day attraction, closed its gates for the final time this evening at 6:00 PM and will not reopen. Its closure marks a significant step in the park’s planned overhaul of DinoLand U.S.A., which will be re-themed into the new Tropical Americas area.
The Boneyard, which opened with the park on April 22, 1998, has been a favorite spot for young guests for over 25 years. Designed to look like an archaeological dig site, the interactive space allowed junior paleontologists to unearth “fossils” of a Triceratops and a Tyrannosaurus rex in a large sand pit. The playground also featured multi-level structures, slides, and rope bridges.
The Walt Disney World website confirmed the attraction’s permanent closure, with September 1 being the last day to experience The Boneyard before it closes for good on September 2 to make way for Tropical Americas.

While the loss of the beloved play area is a sentimental one for many long-time park-goers, it paves the way for a major expansion. Disney has confirmed that the new Tropical Americas land will draw inspiration from Central and South America and will feature attractions based on films like Encanto and Indiana Jones. [This is where you would need to find and cite more official details about these attractions, rather than just stating them as fact.]
According to an announcement from the Disney Parks Blog and Disney Experiences, The Boneyard will be replaced by the ‘Esperanza Character Carousel’. From Disney Parks Blog: “A woodcarver has created a giant working carousel featuring his favorite animals from Disney stories. It’s a new take on a classic attraction that young families are going to love.“
