Disney Ride Completely Removed from Magic Kingdom for Renovation

Disney Ride Completely Removed from Magic Kingdom for Renovation. Last week we saw the rockets and celestial bodies being removed from the Astro Orbiter at Disney World, and this week the ride is just gone. Figuring that the attraction sat 3 stories above the ground, and seeing the crane and walls up around Launching Pad, speculation was that workers would refurbish the ride while still on top of Peoplemover and Launching Pad. (I guess technically it is the 4th floor? If you count the Utilidors being the true first floor of Magic Kingdom)

Astro Orbiter will return this summer, but for now, the ride is completely gone and removed from the Magic Kingdom for refurbishment. We saw Disney do the same thing when Astro Orbiter in Tomorrowland at Disneyland was being refurbished last year, the removal of the attraction. While the one here at Disney World sits higher in the air and is surrounded by an Orray.

Quick science lesson (didn’t think I could sneak one in, did you?): An orrery is a mechanical model of the Solar System that shows the relative positions and motions of the planets and moons according to the heliocentric (Sun-centred) model. This is what Disney Imagineering added to the top of the Astro Orbiter. It doesn’t move and track the planetary movements but still looks cool.

Astro Orbiter will be temporarily closed for refurbishment beginning January 13, 2025, and is planned to reopen in the summer of 2025.

We rode the Peoplemover this morning to get a better look, and it is just gone. We sound like a broken record, it is impressive to see Disney removing the whole attraction. Almost every attraction is surrounded by either other rides or scenery that cannot be moved unless major construction takes place.

Disney World’s Magic Kingdom has a total of 3 rides under refurbishment that will last into the summer of 2025, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, Astro Orbiter, and The Hall of Presidents in Liberty Square.

Lift Off! Hold on tight as your retro 2-passenger spacecraft levitates high into the air, picks up speed, and begins orbiting a galaxy of planets while the sights and sounds of Tomorrowland whirl by far below.

You’re the Captain Now: Control how high you fly by pulling or pushing the lever inside your ship.
