The runDisney balloon lady outrage after the 2026 Disney Wine & Dine 5K at EPCOT is officially the most dramatic thing to happen at a 3.1-mile race all year. Runners took to social media after Friday’s Aristocats-themed runDisney 5K, upset that balloon ladies were on the course, and so far nobody complaining can name a single runner who actually got swept.
Full disclosure, we do not run. My personal policy has always been simple. “The only reasons I run are to a buffet and from a bear.” But we cover Walt Disney World every day, and this one was too good to pass up.
Here is what actually changed. runDisney opened up more 5K spots this year and split the race into start groups lettered A through G, with start times running from 4:30 a.m. to 7:30 a.m. Runners now tear a ticket off the bottom of their bib to get into their group. runDisney’s event guide also says every race runs on a 16-minute-per-mile pace.
Then one runner posted that a cast member at the Aristocats character line warned that the balloon ladies were on the course and the wait was about 45 minutes, and suggested people step out of line. The internet took it from there and decided the balloon ladies had come to drag joggers off the course like Disney bouncers.
runDisney has not publicly explained the balloon ladies’ job on the 5K. The math explains it anyway. Using the projected start times for each start group, the first block of groups finishes starting around 5:11 a.m. At a 16-minute pace, 3.1 miles takes just under 50 minutes. That lands right around 6:00 a.m., which is when the next block is projected to start. The second block’s last start and the third block’s first start line up the same way. The schedule is built so each block can clear the course before the next one starts.
Then there is the pace. Multiple runners reported online that the balloon ladies themselves walked about a 24-minute mile this weekend. If that holds, they were moving eight minutes per mile slower than runDisney’s own limit. That is a strange way to sweep anybody. If the balloon ladies were the enforcers, they were the most relaxed enforcers in Disney history.
And if Disney were quietly pulling 5K runners off the course, somebody would have the story by now. This take is being argued about everywhere online. Plenty of people are mad at the balloon ladies. Nobody can say they know a runner who actually got swept.
What’s left is the attitude. The energy online boils down to this: it’s great that you want to get healthy, you do you, just not on my time. Some runners were annoyed that they had been done for an hour while other people were still walking to their start groups. That isn’t a problem. That is a staggered start doing exactly what it was built to do, which is let more people run.
The one fair complaint is the character lines. A 45-minute wait for a photo is a lot to ask during a race with a pace limit, and runDisney should look at that before the next 5K. But that is a fix for Disney, not a reason to sneer at the back of the pack.
The balloon ladies did not ruin the 5K. They covered 3.1 miles at a steady pace while carrying balloons, which is more than I have done all year. If anything got swept at EPCOT on Friday, it was somebody’s pride.
