Disneyland has named Medal of Honor recipient Royce Williams, a 101-year-old retired U.S. Navy captain, an Honorary Citizen of Disneyland. Disney shared the story of his visit on October 8, 2026. More from the resort is in our Disneyland news.
Disneyland Ambassador Michele Mary presented the honor at Sleeping Beauty Castle, according to Disney. Williams was joined by close friends, fellow retired military aviators and cast members. Later in the day he was honored at the Flag Retreat at the Town Square flagpole on Main Street, U.S.A., with the Disneyland Band and the Dapper Dans taking part. The ceremony happens every afternoon, and we explained how it works in Disney’s daily salute to service.
Williams became a naval aviator in 1943 and served in World War II, Korea and Vietnam. On November 18, 1952, flying from the USS Oriskany, he faced seven Soviet MiG-15s in what Disney calls the longest dogfight in U.S. military history. The mission stayed classified for about 50 years. He received the Medal of Honor in February 2026.
Williams told Disney that Walt Disney was his hero during World War II because of the studio’s animation and artwork in support of the troops. “You know you’re at war and your number one job is not protecting yourself it’s accomplishing a mission,” he said of his service.
He finished the day at Disney California Adventure with a ride on Soarin’ Across America, where the queue celebrates California’s aviation history.
Disney says Disneyland is offering discounted tickets to active and retired U.S. military members and their spouses in 2026, sold through military base ticket offices.
