Kingdom Hearts is officially coming to Fortnite this week, and Epic Games has confirmed all four members of the collaboration’s roster: Sora, Riku, Kairi, and Roxas. The crossover is expected to land in the Item Shop alongside the Chapter 7 Season 4 v42.20 update on September 17, closing out seven months of leaks and speculation since the collaboration first surfaced back in February. Epic confirmed Sora first with a teaser trailer, then followed up with individual character quotes for Riku, Kairi, and Roxas on its official social accounts, locking in the full four-character lineup.
The bigger story fans have latched onto is the Keyblade itself. In the games, Sora’s default weapon, the Kingdom Key, carries a small Mickey Mouse head charm on the chain at the base of the blade. In Fortnite, that charm has been swapped out for the game’s own Loot Llama, visible in the season’s key art since August and confirmed again in Epic’s official reveal trailer this week.
The theory going around, and it holds up, is that this comes down to Kingdom Hearts lore rather than a licensing issue. In the games, the Kingdom Key can only be wielded by Sora specifically, which would create an obvious contradiction if every Fortnite player was running around with the real thing. Swapping the Mickey charm for the Loot Llama turns it into a stand-in weapon rather than the actual Kingdom Key, letting any player pick it up without breaking the story. The theory gets more support from Rocket League’s own Kingdom Hearts collaboration, where the same Keyblade has its Mickey charm replaced with a small ball charm instead. Two different games making the identical swap points to a deliberate choice on Epic and Disney’s part, not a one-off design quirk.
This is the latest in a run of Disney gaming crossovers this year, following Fortnitemares crossing over into Halloween Horror Nights as a physical scare zone at Universal Orlando and Hollywood, and comes not long after news that Frontier Developments signed a deal to build a Disney park construction game.
