Disney Store Closing Online Operations in Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, and Malaysia

Disney Store Closing Online Operations in Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, and Malaysia

Disney is shutting down DisneyStore.com.au and DisneyStore.asia, the official Disney Store online shops serving Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, and Malaysia, on September 30, 2026, ending Disney’s direct online retail presence in all four markets. This is specifically about the online storefronts. Disney isn’t closing physical retail locations as part of this announcement.

It’s a notable shift for anyone who follows our Disney Consumer Products coverage, since Disney Store has been positioned as the flagship of Disney’s direct-to-consumer retail strategy for years.

According to Disney’s own FAQ page, both sites will stop taking orders at 11:59 p.m. AEST on September 30, which lines up to 1:59 a.m. NZST on October 1 for New Zealand shoppers. Any order placed before that cutoff will still be shipped and fulfilled under the normal timelines, and existing orders will continue to receive returns, exchanges, and warranty support under Disney’s published policies. Items currently listed as sold out aren’t expected to come back before the site closes, so what’s in stock right now is effectively the final chance to grab it.

Disney was clear that this only affects these four markets. Disney Store operations in the US, UK, Japan, China, Korea, the Philippines, and the Middle East aren’t part of this announcement and continue as normal.

Disney hasn’t given a specific reason for closing these four online stores, and the FAQ page sticks to logistics rather than motive. But this closure lines up with a strategy Disney has been running since 2021, when the company began closing over 200 Disney Store mall locations across the US and most of Canada to shift focus toward its global shopDisney.com platform, park-based retail, and third-party licensed retailers. Disney Store has leaned into that shopDisney-first approach at major events too, including its D23 2026 eCommerce Day, which let fans outside Anaheim shop exclusive event merchandise online rather than in person. Disney shut down its Disney Village store at Disneyland Paris in January 2026 after 33 years, the last classic Disney Store location left in Europe, with that space set to become a new retail concept called Disney Wonders. Sixteen Disney Store locations inside Walt Disney World itself closed in late 2024. Disney Store’s own store locator now lists only about 21 locations worldwide.

The business logic behind that pattern is fairly straightforward, even without Disney spelling it out for this specific closure. Running a localized online store, warehouse, and fulfillment operation in a smaller market carries real fixed costs: local inventory, customer service, shipping infrastructure, and currency handling. Licensing merchandise out to third-party retailers instead trades that overhead for a cut of the sale, with none of the operating risk. Retail analysts covering Disney’s earlier round of store closures pointed to the same math: e-commerce and third-party retail had already been eating into what physical and region-specific Disney Store sites used to have close to a monopoly on, making the owned storefronts harder to justify as their own dedicated operation.

For Australia specifically, this closure lands alongside a broader retreat from the region. Disney Cruise Line pulled out of Australian waters entirely after the Disney Wonder’s final local sailing in February 2026, with high operating costs cited as a factor. Disney has also ruled out ever building a Disneyland in Australia, pointing to the country’s population as too small to justify the investment. Between the cruise line’s exit, no local park on the horizon, and now the online store closing, direct-to-consumer Disney experiences in Australia and New Zealand are shrinking fast.

As for whether fans in these four markets will still be able to get Disney merchandise they love, the answer is yes, just not directly from Disney. The company’s FAQ says merchandise will remain available through “authorized and trusted retailers” in each country going forward, but no specific retailers or replacement storefront have been named yet. That likely means department stores, toy retailers, and licensed partners that already carry Disney product locally, the same kind of third-party retail that’s been expanding into this space for years. What fans lose is the one storefront guaranteed to carry Disney’s full catalog and confirm everything sold is authentic. Third-party retail coverage of that catalog is rarely as complete, and shoppers may need to piece together purchases across more than one retailer to find everything they used to get in one place.
