The Society of Explorers and Adventurers is stepping into the Imagineering Pavilion at D23 this year with a dedicated panel, “An Inside Look at the Society of Explorers and Adventurers,” on Friday, August 14. The headline draw is a crate from S.E.A.’s own archives, unopened for at least a century, that neither Imagineering nor the Society says it has looked inside. It is a fun reveal on its own, but the timing and the partner make us want to ask why.

S.E.A. Is Usually Background Lore, Not the Main Event
S.E.A. has quietly connected Disney Parks storytelling for years, showing up in the DNA of Tokyo DisneySea, the Skyliner gondola stations, Jungle Skipper Canteen, and other pockets around Walt Disney World and Disneyland without ever getting its own spotlight panel. That is what makes this year different. Imagineering does not usually dedicate D23 stage time to the connective tissue between attractions. It dedicates stage time to attractions themselves. A S.E.A.-branded panel, on its own, is a signal that the Society is being positioned for something bigger than nostalgia.
Could This Be Tied to the New Indiana Jones Ride at Tropical Americas?
Here is where we have to be careful, because officially, Indiana Jones has never been part of S.E.A. canon. The Society’s roster is entirely Disney-original characters. But the timing lines up in a way that is hard to ignore. Disney has said the Tropical Americas Indiana Jones attraction, reusing the former DINOSAUR ride system, will carry an original story built specifically for Animal Kingdom rather than a copy of Disneyland’s Temple of the Forbidden Eye. An original story leaves Imagineering room to build new connections that did not exist before, and Animal Kingdom’s own design history already leans into an explorer’s ethos going back to Joe Rohde’s original vision for the park. If Imagineering wanted a natural home for its first real crossover between Indy and the Society, a newly written Animal Kingdom attraction is about as clean an opportunity as it gets.
The bigger reveal for Tropical Americas is expected the very next day, August 15, at the Horizons: Disney Experiences Showcase. That is not a coincidence we can prove, but it is one worth noticing. A mystery artifact panel the day before the biggest Animal Kingdom update in two years has the shape of a table-setter, whether or not the crate itself turns out to matter.
Why Now?
That is the real question. S.E.A. has been available to spotlight at any D23 for years and Imagineering never has. Doing it now, the same weekend Tropical Americas is expected to get its most detailed reveal since 2024, suggests Imagineering wants fans thinking about the Society’s world before they see whatever comes next for the Indiana Jones attraction. We do not know what is in that crate. Neither does Imagineering, according to them. But this is exactly the kind of nostalgic, storytelling-forward setup that Disney fans live for, and we will be watching closely on August 14 and 15 to see if the two panels end up talking to each other.
