Here’s the official synopsis. As Biltmore House opens for the first time on Christmas Eve 1895, 13-year-old Elizabeth and her family are holiday guests. When she notices Michael, a fellow teen caught trespassing by the staff, Elizabeth comes to his rescue by claiming to know him, much to his relief. The two share an instant connection and set out to explore Biltmore, but Michael inexplicably vanishes.
Twenty years later, Elizabeth is spending Christmas at Biltmore, this time accompanied by James, a suitor her Aunt Maysilee is keen for her to wed. When a stranger asks her to dance at the Christmas gala, she’s shocked to discover it’s Michael. Thrilled to reunite with her friend, she throws herself into his arms, but the world around her changes in an instant when Elizabeth is transported into the modern world with Michael, a tourist from the present day who had traveled to the past 20 years earlier with the help of a magical hourglass in Biltmore’s library. Now Elizabeth and Michael must find a way to send her back to her own time without arousing suspicion from Michael’s mother and sister during their family vacation. As Elizabeth experiences life and Christmas in the 21st century, she and Michael grow close, and when the time comes for her to return to 1915, she must decide whether to resume the life chosen for her or let her heart lead her down a new path in the present.
A Grand Biltmore Christmas stars Holland Roden and Niall Matter in the lead roles of Elizabeth and Michael, with Jonathan Frakes returning as the Biltmore employee he played in the original film. Wes Brown has also been confirmed to return, and Rachel Boston, who made a cameo in the first movie, confirmed she’s part of this installment as well. There has been buzz that The Way Home star and former Asheville resident Andie MacDowell could make a surprise appearance, though that has not been officially confirmed by Hallmark.
Hallmark has been careful to note that this isn’t a direct sequel so much as a return to the same magical world of the original, following a new couple through their own Gilded Age to modern-day romance. The film premieres as part of Hallmark Channel’s 17th annual Countdown to Christmas event later this year. An exact premiere date hasn’t been announced yet, but we’ll update this article the moment Hallmark confirms it.
Our Take: The original A Biltmore Christmas is one of our all-time comfort watches in this house, the kind of movie that goes on every year without fail. Bringing back Jonathan Frakes, Wes Brown, and Rachel Boston gives this new story a real sense of continuity even though it’s framed as its own tale rather than a true sequel, and that’s exactly the right call. Biltmore House is such a specific, gorgeous setting that revisiting it with new characters feels less like a retread and more like an excuse to spend another Christmas there.
