Disney Store’s New AI Shopping Assistant Faces Overwhelming Criticism Online

June 24, 2026

Disney Store has begun rolling out a new AI Personal Shopping Assistant inside its iOS app, and the response from fans across Instagram and Facebook has been almost entirely negative. Disney Parks Blog announced the pilot program on June 23, with select guests gaining access first and a wider iOS rollout coming soon. If the goal was to win fans over before launch day, that goal has not been met.

According to Disney Parks Blog, the AI Personal Shopping Assistant is designed to make product discovery easier inside the Disney Store app, whether someone is hunting for a gift, putting together a park outfit, or just browsing. The AI responds to natural, conversational language and is built around Disney’s brand voice and character knowledge to surface recommendations and availability information that feel distinctly Disney rather than generic.

Disney Store's New AI Shopping Assistant Is Already Facing Backlash From Fans

Disney Parks’ Instagram post announcing the assistant pulled in more than a thousand comments, with hundreds more piling on across Facebook. After reading through both threads, FLN could not find a single comment that was clearly supportive of the new tool. Disney announcements, especially ones tied to parks and merchandise, usually draw a wave of praise from collector and parks fan accounts racing to be first with a positive take. This time, that wave never showed up.

The themes repeated again and again. Many commenters said flatly that they would rather talk to a real cast member, with one of the most liked replies on Instagram simply asking whether Disney could bring human staff back into physical stores instead. Others raised concerns about job losses, asking directly whether the project was worth the cast members losing their livelihoods. Frustration with generative AI in general showed up across both platforms too, with commenters calling the rollout unnecessary and asking Disney to slow down on AI features across the board. On Facebook, several guests said the announcement alone was enough to make them stop shopping at the Disney Store (time will tell if they actually do).

It is worth noting how early this still is. The assistant is only live for select guests on iOS, full iOS availability is still rolling out, and Disney has not addressed the response as of publish time. Phone support for human help is unaffected. Even so, the near total lack of positive reaction stands out, especially with verified and larger fan accounts joining the criticism rather than rushing to defend the rollout the way they typically do for new Disney announcements.

FLN will keep watching to see whether Disney adjusts its messaging, expands or pauses the pilot, or addresses the bot and resale concerns that kept coming up in the comments.
