Walt Disney World recently shared details about a major transformation coming to Disney’s Hollywood Studios. In late summer 2026, the area currently known as Animation Courtyard will become a tribute to the Walt Disney Animation Studios lot in Burbank, California. This new land features “The Magic of Disney Animation,” a multi-sensory experience inspired by the award-winning short film Once Upon a Studio.
The centerpiece of this expansion replaces the current Star Wars: Launch Bay. The building will be topped by a replica of the iconic blue Sorcerer Hat found at the real California headquarters. Inside, guests enter a world where Disney characters have taken over the studio while the animators are away.
Visitors can explore various studio departments filled with interactive moments. The space includes an enchanted art gallery where portraits come to life and a dedicated theater showing Once Upon a Studio with new special effects.
Interactive Play and Character Encounters
Families with young children can visit the “Drawn to Wonderland” playground. This indoor area features oversized flowers and musical instruments inspired by Mary Blair’s original concept art for Alice in Wonderland.
The “Off the Page!” section offers unique character greetings themed to different stages of production:
- Mulan in the Story department.
- Rapunzel in the Layout department.
- Donald and Daisy in CG Animation.
- Goofy in Lighting.
Learn to Draw with Olaf
A highlight of the expansion is the “Olaf Draws!” Animation Academy. This experience features an advanced Audio-Animatronics figure of Olaf from Frozen. The snowman acts as a host, sitting at an animator’s desk to guide guests through character sketching.
Classes feature pre-recorded instructions from actual Disney directors and animators. Guests can learn to draw Mickey Mouse, Moana, or even Ursula. The room includes sleigh-themed tables for children and professional-style workstations for adults.
