Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu streams exclusively on Disney+ starting September 2, and the real headline isn’t the release date itself. It’s that the film will be available in IMAX Enhanced, giving every Disney+ subscriber access to IMAX’s expanded aspect ratio at home, the format’s biggest home streaming rollout for a Star Wars title yet.
We flagged this exact question back when tickets first went on sale, noting the IMAX presentation was one of the bigger unknowns heading into the film’s home release. We also covered the digital and 4K Ultra HD release dates back in July. Disney+ is now answering that question directly.
IMAX Enhanced on Disney+ preserves the expanded aspect ratio the film was shot and mastered in for IMAX screens, rather than cropping or letterboxing it down to a standard widescreen frame the way most streaming presentations do. Disney says this keeps the filmmakers’ original creative intent intact for a more immersive viewing experience at home. Subscribers with certified TVs and AV receivers also get IMAX Enhanced sound powered by DTS, carrying the full dynamic range of the film’s original cinematic mix rather than a compressed streaming version of it.
The film picks up after the fall of the Empire, with Din Djarin, played by Pedro Pascal, and his young apprentice Grogu enlisted by the fledgling New Republic to help track down scattered Imperial warlords. Sigourney Weaver joins the cast, with Jeremy Allen White and Martin Scorsese lending their voices. Jon Favreau directs from a script he co-wrote with Dave Filoni and Noah Kloor.
Disney+ is pairing the release with two more debuts the same day. A two-episode Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu Official Podcast goes live at 6 p.m. PT, shot on the film’s Adelphi Base Bar set with Favreau, Filoni, composer Ludwig Göransson, and stars Pedro Pascal and Sigourney Weaver. Separately, LEGO Star Wars: The Mandalorian, a comedic animated special reworking stories from all three seasons of the original series, also debuts the same day.
IMAX Enhanced is worth paying attention to beyond just this one release. Streaming platforms throw around words like “cinematic” and “theater quality” constantly, and most of the time it’s marketing language with no real technical spec behind it. IMAX Enhanced is different. It’s an actual mastering standard with real aspect ratio and audio requirements attached, and Disney+ has been rolling it out slowly across select Marvel and Star Wars titles rather than applying it everywhere. Getting it for a film this high-profile is a real signal of how seriously Disney is treating the format going forward.
