Piston Peak National Park, the Cars inspired expansion coming to Frontierland at Magic Kingdom, has a new landmark on site this week. A large blue crane base has gone up near the Haunted Mansion, and fresh photos from both the ground and the air show just how far the dirt work and wall construction have come since Rivers of America closed to make room for it.
Piston Peak is Disney and Pixar’s new area rising where Rivers of America, Tom Sawyer Island, and the Liberty Square Riverboat used to sit, part of what Disney has called the largest expansion in Magic Kingdom’s history. Disney has confirmed two new attractions for the land, along with a visitor lodge, a Ranger HQ, and trails, all set inside the world of Cars. The buildings are being designed in a style called Parkitecture, an approach developed by the National Park Service to make structures feel like they grew out of the landscape around them rather than sitting on top of it. Disney has described the land as filled with towering trees, snowcapped mountains, waterfalls, rivers, and geysers, with some of those geysers stretching out from Big Thunder Mountain Railroad itself and into the trails of the new off road rally next door.
Aerial photos of the site show how much of the old riverbed has been cleared and reshaped since Rivers of America closed last summer. Full credit for these aerial images goes to bioreconstruct on X, whose flyovers continue to give fans some of the clearest looks at construction happening across Walt Disney World. Big Thunder Mountain Railroad still stands right in the middle of the site, easy to spot from above, having reopened earlier this year after its own refurbishment. Along the edge that borders Liberty Square, new curving concrete walls are already going in. Based on how Disney has described the waterways and geysers planned for this side of the park, these look like early footprint work for those water features, though Disney has not confirmed exactly what will sit behind each section of wall.
FLN visited the site this week for a closer look on the ground. Along the Haunted Mansion side, a cleared embankment shows just how much earth has been cut away, with one section of precast wall panel already secured into place against the hillside.
Nearby, crews were working with a CAT excavator and a crane from Beyel Bros to keep moving dirt and materials around the site.
Closer to Liberty Square, a taller finished section of retaining wall is already standing, with the rooftops of Harbour House visible just behind it.
The most eye-catching piece of new equipment right now is that blue steel tower rising near the tree line by the Haunted Mansion. It is the base of a larger crane currently being installed, an early sign that vertical construction crews will be working overhead in that section soon.
The Imagineers Behind Piston Peak – Piston Peak is being steered by two of Walt Disney Imagineering’s most senior creative leaders. Chris Beatty is Portfolio Executive Creative Director for Walt Disney World, overseeing creative direction across Magic Kingdom and Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Before this project, Beatty led Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge and, before that, New Fantasyland, two of the largest single land expansions in Disney parks history. Working alongside him is Michael Hundgen, Executive Producer on the Magic Kingdom transformation, who has talked about the weight of getting a project like this right, telling Men’s Journal Disney recognizes the massive responsibility that comes with it.
Also on the team is Wyatt Winter, Executive Producer of Magic Kingdom’s transformation, whose Disney career started as a cast member at Big Thunder Mountain Railroad before he became an Imagineer. Winter later worked directly on Big Thunder’s own recent refurbishment, which reopened this past May, and now finds himself overseeing Piston Peak just steps from where his Disney career began.
More Construction Taking Shape Across Walt Disney World – Piston Peak is only one piece of the construction currently reshaping Walt Disney World. Over at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, Tropical Americas just hit a milestone of its own as roof trusses started going up on the new carousel inside Pueblo Esperanza, not far from where Casita’s walls are already rising for the new Encanto ride. Over at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, Monstropolis continues to progress with its roller coaster structure and Harryhausen’s entrance frame both visible from above.
What This Means Right Now – There’s still no official opening date for Piston Peak, and guests walking through Frontierland and Liberty Square won’t see much beyond the construction walls for now. But between the wall pours, the ongoing dirt work, and a new crane going in, the pace on site suggests vertical construction on show buildings could start ramping up before long.
