The Cheetah Girls are officially getting a new generation. Disney announced on July 8 that “The Cheetah Girls: Next Gen” has been greenlit for Disney Channel and Disney+, bringing back Raven-Symoné as Galleria and Adrienne Bailon as Chanel alongside an all new cast of young stars, with production set to begin this month in South Africa.
Executive producers Debra Martin Chase and Raven-Symoné are steering the new installment, with Lynn Whitfield and Lori Alter reprising their roles as Dorothea and Juanita. Sabrina Bryan returns for a special appearance as Dorinda, and Sophia Bush joins the cast in a supporting role as Jennifré. The music driven film is directed and co-produced by Bille Woodruff, known for his work on Bridgerton, and written by Kara Holden, Sarah Watson, and Deborah Swisher.
The new generation of Cheetah Girls includes Leah Sava Jeffries, known for Percy Jackson and the Olympians, as Galleria’s daughter Faith. Carmen Sanchez plays Chanel’s sister Dior, Kaileen Chang plays Ruby, and Sophie Lennon plays Brooklyn. South African newcomer Kamogelo Ramashala, discovered through Disney’s global open casting call, rounds out the group as Kendi.
The story follows Galleria and Chanel as they travel to Africa with Faith and her three friends to volunteer at a wildlife sanctuary. Along the way the girls test their friendship, find their voice, and discover the Cheetah spirit as they work to save the preserve and ultimately take the stage as the new Cheetah Girls. Disney Kids and Family president Ayo Davis said the franchise’s message about friendship and empowering young people to use their voice still resonates today, and that this new cast allows that legacy to continue for a new generation of kids and families.
The original Cheetah Girls trilogy remains one of the most beloved Disney Channel Original Movie franchises ever made. All three are streaming now on Disney+ as part of the Throwbacks Collection. You can watch The Cheetah Girls, The Cheetah Girls 2, and The Cheetah Girls: One World all on Disney+ right now to catch up before Next Gen arrives.
