Hope Valley 1874 Delivers a Pioneer Prequel Worth Watching. Before the Heart called, they settled the area with cattle and panning for gold, building a boardinghouse, and running a trading post. Season One of Hope Valley 1874 wrapped up today on Hallmark+, and we have thoughts.

We spent the last 8 episodes getting to know the folks that settled the area that becomes Coal Valley, then later Hope Valley. In 1874, Rebecca Clarke travels with her 11-year-old daughter to the Canadian frontier in search of a new life.  When she realizes the boardinghouse she purchased is not as advertised, she has no choice but to accept help from local rancher Tom Moore.

Bethany Joy Lenz and Benjamin Ayres lead the cast as Rebecca Clarke and Tom Moore. The rest of the cast is rich and full of vibrant and compelling characters. We got the opportunity to interview quite a few of the cast, and we are here to tell you that these actors love what they are growing with this story. Every actor in this show deftly and masterfully tells their stories.

Rebecca, we find out, is running from her late husband’s family. She takes a chance on herself and comes west to start a boardinghouse and give her daughter, Sarah, a beautiful life. The boardinghouse isn’t quite what she expects when she arrives, and through the people she meets in the settlement, it comes together. Rebecca becomes invaluable to the community.

She starts a mess tent to feed the prospectors and employs a young couple, Lars and Rachel Yost, played by Grayson Gurnsey and Matreya Scarrwener, to run the mess tent and help with the boardinghouse. She helps deliver the Yost’s baby, Ned. Rebecca sets Nash McCabe’s broken leg and teaches his wife, Peggy, to read. They are played by Brad Abramenko and Chelsea Hobbs.

Tom Moore is a gruff and rugged rancher who doesn’t want the prospectors interrupting his land and cattle. He initially doesn’t want Rebecca to make the prospectors comfortable, but their friendship softens his stance. He sees how hard she’s working and trying to make a better life for Sarah. Rebecca eventually confides in Tom that her late husband’s family is wealthy and wants to take Sarah from her.

Hattie, played by Jill Hennessy, is the woman who runs the trading post. She seems to be a woman in charge. Her daughter, Olivia, played by Roan Curtis, is a beautiful artist. Olivia finds herself at a crossroads. She gets accepted to an art school in Toronto and finds herself torn between two men, woodworker and ranchhand, Clayton, played by Jedidiah Goodacre, and newly appointed Mountie, Alexander, played by Lachlan Quarmby. When Olivia tells the men about her offer to go to Toronto, each has a very different reaction. Will she choose Clayton and stay in town, or follow her dreams like Alexander tells her to do?

The season ends on a cliffhanger with Olivia needing to make a decision and the Mounties coming to arrest Rebecca for theft. Suspicious boarder at the boardinghouse, Mr. Marshall, is up to no good, or so Rebecca thought. Turns out he’s looking for coal. We all know what happens with the coal mines in the near future. Tom was supposed to buy a nearby rancher’s land, but pulls out when he spends his money to rescue the ring that was stolen from Rebecca. That land is, in turn, bought by Archie Doyle, who is constantly at odds with Tom. Thankfully, Hallmark announced yesterday that the series has been picked up for a second season coming in 2027.

Hope Valley 1874 feels fresh and a little gritier that When Calls The Heart is now. The first few seasons of When Calls The Heart had that grit when dealing with the loss of the coal miners and the town rebuilding. Benjamin Ayres brings an air of rugged cowboy. He even noticeably has a deeper voice as Tom. Bethany Joy Lenz not only brought all the heart to Rebecca, but she also wrote and sang the theme song. These are people who care deeply about the story they are telling.

The show was created, produced, and written by Alfonso Moreno, who also worked on When Calls The Heart and the spinoff When Hope Calls. The writing feels like it’s new stories and not the same old same old. The drama is intriguing.

The little easter eggs that the writers have given to the audience are enough to keep the Hearties happy, like the birth of little Ned Yost. Ned Yost, as an adult, is the beloved Hope Valley Mercantile owner. The discovery of the coal. The boardinghouse that becomes the saloon. The story is new and standalone enough that if you aren’t a Heartie, you can follow it and enjoy it.

Fantasy Land News is happy to have gone on the ride of Season one, and we are looking forward to a bright and beautiful future with Season two next year.
