‘When Calls The Heart’ Look Back At My Favorite Characters – Bill Avery. In this series of posts, I’m going over some of my favorite characters. Bill Avery is, to me, the father figure of Hope Valley.
Bill Avery has been on ‘When Calls the Heart‘ since the end of season one. He is a former Mountie, turned Inspector, turned Judge. He was briefly the mayor and lost an election to Mike Hickam. What can’t Bill do? He was very close to the late Mountie Jack Thornton. He is very close to Elizabeth Thornton. Bill even serves as Little Jack’s Godfather. His gruff exterior sometimes is off-putting, but inside is a heart of gold. He was particularly close to Abigail Stanton (played by Lori Loughlin) before she left town. Bill even bought in and partnered with Abigail in her Cafe.
Bill has always just missed new romances. We thought he would have a romance with Abigail, but his ex-wife, Nora, put a damper on that, followed by Abigail’s eventual relationship with Pastor Frank. It looked like he’d get together with Dottie or Molly, but that didn’t work out. He seemed to develop feelings for a stranger to Hope Valley, Madeline St. John, but she left town at the end of season 10.
Bill is never afraid to jump in and stop the bad guys. He fiercely protects his town and friends. He provides the father figure and protector. The town would be a lesser place without our beloved former Mountie, Bill Avery.
I have been aware of Jack Wagner most of my life. My mom was a ‘General Hospital’ fan, and Jack Wagner started on GH in 1983 as the very crazy, cool Frisco Jones. Frisco was part of a super couple with Felicia. Felicia was played by Kristina Wagner. She was married to Jack Wagner from 1993 to 2006. Kristina also had a role for a few seasons on ‘When Calls The Heart‘ as Bill Avery’s former wife, Nora.
What we don’t see in Hope Valley is that Jack Wagner is a very gifted musician with 6 albums. My favorite of his singles is the 1984 hit, “All I Need.” He is also an avid golfer who has played in and won many tournaments. He appeared in Season 14 of ‘Dancing With The Stars.’ He starred in a series of movies for Hallmark Channel. The Wedding March series costarred Josie Bissett.
Bill Avery is triumphantly portrayed by the talented Jack Wagner. We are all better of with him as our Bill. You can watch When Calls the Heart on Sundays at 8/7 on Hallmark Channel and the next day on Hallmark+
