D23 marked Walt Disney World’s 55th anniversary Sunday, October 4, with D23 Spotlight Series: 55 Magical Years of Storytelling at Disney’s Contemporary Resort. The night had three parts: a reunion of 13 past Walt Disney World Ambassadors, a conversation with Disney Legend Joe Rohde, and a Carousel of Progress panel that delivered the real news.
The group spanned more than five decades. Robert Sias represented 1995. Steven Miller served in 2001 and 2002. Marjorie Colas was selected for the team in 2006. Clay Shoemaker and Vanessa Rosas were the 2009 and 2010 team, followed by Jennifer Mason in 2011 and 2012 and Nathaniel Palma in 2015 and 2016. Stephen Lim was part of the 2019 to 2021 team, and Serena Arvizu and Shannon Smith Conrad were the 2024 and 2025 team.
Two of those names will be familiar to FLN readers. Miller now leads the Walt Disney World Ambassador Program and was part of last week’s State of Our World event at EPCOT. We interviewed Smith Conrad during her term.
The headliner was Debby Dane Browne, the first Walt Disney World Ambassador, who held the role when the resort opened in October 1971. It is hard to top her story. Every Ambassador had a milestone to talk about, and she was there when everything opened. It was a fitting follow-up to the week’s other reunion, when Class of 1971 cast members gathered at Magic Kingdom.
Part two was a conversation with Joe Rohde, the Imagineer behind Disney’s Animal Kingdom. We love listening to Rohde talk and tell stories, and that has not changed. This segment was built around his book, Floating Mountains, and it felt more like a stop on a book tour than part of a 55th anniversary celebration. D23 had already hosted a separate lunch with Rohde two days earlier, and that ticket came with a signed copy.
The reason to be in the room was the final panel. Steven Vagnini of D23 and Becky Cline of the Walt Disney Archives brought out the Imagineers behind the Carousel of Progress refurbishment, and they came with news. Debi Derryberry, the voice of Patricia since 1994, is returning as Grandmother. The new Walt Disney scene is getting a talking toucan Audio-Animatronic, and we have the first photos. For history fans, the biggest news was that every piece of the old show has been saved, and the pumpkin will return.
The Ambassadors and the Carousel of Progress panel were worth the ticket. Guests walked away with a new pin, and VIP’s got a poster of the new Carousel of Progress.
