Disney Cruise Line Shares First Behind-the-Scenes Look at Its Dry Dock Process

Disney Cruise Line is giving fans its first behind-the-scenes look at how it handles dry dock, and the numbers from the Disney Wonder alone are huge. Nearly 1,000 crew and cast members finished more than 100 projects in just 14 days, laid over 12 miles of new carpet and added a new sustainable hull coating, following similar work on the Disney Magic and Disney Fantasy.

The look inside comes as Disney Cruise Line moves through the largest expansion in its history. Its newest ship just hit a major construction milestone, and the Disney Believe reveal livestream is set for October 7. While the new ships get most of the attention, the dry dock story is about the ships families are already sailing on.

A dry dock is when a ship comes out of the water for inspections and renovations. Each Disney Cruise Line ship goes through one about every five years, and Disney says the planning starts years ahead, with teams studying every space on board to decide what to refresh and what to build on. When the ship finally arrives at the shipyard, marine teams, technical specialists, designers, Walt Disney Imagineers and crew members work around the clock on a tight schedule.

The Disney Wonder is the latest ship to come out of dry dock after entering a shipyard in Canada in August. Disney says the 14-day project covered more than 100 projects and over 12 miles of new carpet, and the new sustainable hull coating covered an area Disney compares to painting 10 football fields.

The Disney Fantasy got the biggest guest-facing changes during its dry dock in Brest, France, last October. It added Ramone’s Cantina, a Cars-inspired quick-service spot, an updated Senses Spa & Salon and the new Fantasy Tower Suite, a two-level suite inspired by Fantasia that took over the space once used by the Outlook Bar and Radio Studio. It follows the Tower Suite Disney added to the Disney Dream in 2024.

Across the Fantasy, Magic and Wonder, Disney also refreshed Edge, the club for tweens, with a new color scheme and modular activity areas.

“At Disney Cruise Line, every enhancement we make begins with a single question: How can we make the guest experience better?” Tracy Wilson, senior vice president and general manager of Disney Cruise Line Operations

Disney says nearly 90 percent of its guests rate their experience as excellent, and Walt Disney Imagineering leads the creative side of each refresh. Alexis Cummins, creative director at Walt Disney Imagineering, said every dry dock is a chance to bring new life to spaces based on how guests actually use them.

Some of the most important work happens below the waterline. The Disney Magic and Disney Wonder received advanced hull coatings, and the Disney Fantasy got a new bulbous bow, the rounded section at the front of the hull that sits just under the water. The new 180-ton bow has a more tapered shape designed to help the ship move through the water more efficiently and burn less fuel. Disney says these changes support its environmental goals and keep the ships running efficiently for the long haul.

The crew got attention too. Disney reimagined one of its crew dining locations, giving the people who work on board a better place to recharge between shifts.

Our Take: Disney rarely lets fans see this side of the cruise line, and it is a good reminder that these ships are working vessels that need real care to stay at Disney’s level. The Magic and Wonder have been sailing since 1998 and 1999, so seeing Disney keep investing in its original ships while new ones arrive is good news for families who love them. If you have a sailing on the Wonder, Magic or Fantasy coming up, you are boarding a freshly updated ship, and Ramone’s Cantina on the Fantasy is worth a stop for any Cars fan.
