Avengers: Endgame is just $39 million away from becoming the highest-grossing movie of all time again, and it could get there as soon as this coming weekend. Avengers: Endgame Encore opened at No. 1 with an estimated $86 million worldwide, including $26 million in the U.S. and Canada and $60 million internationally, according to Disney. The re-release returned to theaters September 25 with new footage setting up Avengers: Doomsday and brings Endgame to $2.885 billion, second only to Avatar.
Endgame has worn this crown before. It passed Avatar in July 2019 and held the all-time record until March 2021, when a re-release in China pushed Avatar back to the top. Now the gap is $39 million, less than half of what the Encore made in its first three days. Even with a normal second-weekend drop, the Encore could close that gap by next Sunday and put Endgame back at No. 1 all time.
The opening itself set records too. Disney says it’s the second-biggest global debut ever for a re-release, behind only Titanic 3D in 2012, and it pushed Marvel Studios past $35 billion across 38 films. Endgame Encore played in 3,060 theaters and beat Resident Evil and Heart of the Beast for the top spot, according to Boxoffice Pro, seven years after Endgame first ruled the box office. Infinity Vision, Disney’s new premium large-format screens making their debut with this release, brought in about 52% of the domestic weekend.

Watching Endgame chase Avatar again is the most fun box office story of the year. Fans turned a seven-year-old movie into a No. 1 opening, and now they have a real shot at putting it back on top.
