Disney Spotlights Small Business Suppliers in New “Sounds of Disney” Ad

Disney has released “Sounds of Disney,” a documentary-style ad that builds a version of the Steamboat Willie theme entirely out of theme park noise: the click of a seatbelt, the whistle of a train, the whir of a soft serve machine. The ad is really a vehicle for a bigger number. Disney says its parks and resorts support more than 403,000 jobs and generate $67 billion in annual U.S. economic impact, and the sounds in the spot are meant to represent the people and businesses behind that figure.

Some of the sounds come from Cast Members doing their actual jobs. Others stand in for suppliers most guests never think about. Four get named credit in the ad: Le Chef Bakery in Montebello, California, which has supplied baked goods to Disney parks for more than 20 years, Southeast Dairy Processors in Tampa, which has made the soft serve since Walt Disney World opened in 1971, Chef’s Garden in Huron, Ohio, a family-owned produce farm supplying the parks for over two decades, and Sobel Westex in Las Vegas, the linen supplier behind Disneyland, Walt Disney World, and Disney Cruise Line. Disney says those four represent a small slice of the thousands of businesses it works with across all 50 states.

The making-of details are where the ad gets a little precious with itself. Music Supervisor Evelin Garcia described layering strings and “sparkle” notes over the real park recordings to create what she called a pixie dust-like effect, which is a lot of language for reverb. Associate Producer Nicole Figueroa-Sierra said the goal was capturing everything from the person trimming flowers to the person pressing the button that starts the fireworks. That is a genuinely nice way to describe the invisible labor that makes a park day run, even packaged inside a corporate video about corporate spending.

Here is the honest read. An ad that exists to advertise how much money Disney spends elsewhere is a very Disney move, and the company is not shy about wrapping it in Steamboat Willie nostalgia to make the economic impact numbers go down easier. But the underlying gesture, naming actual small and family-owned suppliers who have quietly kept parks running for 20-plus years, is a rare bit of specificity in a genre that usually stays vague. Next time that soft serve machine is whirring in front of you, there is a real bakery and a real dairy processor behind it, and now you know their names.
