Regal and AMC Theatres have revealed the Resident Evil Organ Transplant Popcorn Bag as tickets go on sale for the film’s September 18 release, and it’s a safe bet more chains will have their own version of this one before the movie opens.
This follows our earlier look at Universal Japan’s Resident Evil popcorn bucket for Halloween Horror Nights, and it’s a sign this franchise’s theatrical return is turning into a real collectibles moment across more than one market. This Resident Evil is a full reboot, not a continuation of the Milla Jovovich film series, and it comes from an unexpected name in horror. Zach Cregger, who wrote and directed Barbarian and Weapons, wrote and directed this one too, with Shay Hatten co-writing the script. The story follows Bryan, a medical delivery courier played by Austin Abrams, who gets pulled into an outbreak in Raccoon City during a heavy blizzard while trying to complete an out-of-the-area delivery. Zach Cherry, Kali Reis, and Paul Walter Hauser play a trio of Umbrella scientists caught up in the same night, and Johnno Wilson rounds out the cast as an Umbrella enforcer. The film is rated R for strong bloody violence and gore, and early coverage has framed it as a return to straightforward survival horror after years of the franchise leaning into action.
The popcorn bag itself is styled as a medical organ transport cooler, complete with a white cross, a “Handle with Care, Keep Cool, Do Not Freeze” warning label, and an organ transplant heart icon stitched onto the front. It comes with a large popcorn included, and the marketing image shows a prop organ tucked into the popcorn itself, a detail Regal is leaning into hard with the tagline “heart not included.”
What makes this one better than the usual horror movie tie-in bag is that it actually connects to the plot instead of just borrowing the franchise’s aesthetic. Bryan’s whole reason for being in Raccoon City is a medical delivery run, so a bag built to look like the kind of container he’d actually be carrying is a smarter piece of merchandise than it might look like at first glance.
Meanwhile, for folks looking for tins and buckets, Epic Theatres in Florida announced two tins, one round and a hexagonal version, plus a cup. All feature the poster artwork for Resident Evil.
