Two of Robin Williams’ most beloved films are finally getting the 4K treatment. Dead Poets Society and Mrs. Doubtfire arrive on 4K Ultra HD Digital and 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray on September 29, more than three decades after they first hit theaters.
Dead Poets Society came first, in 1989, with Peter Weir directing Williams as John Keating, the English professor whose “Carpe Diem” philosophy pushes his students at a rigid prep school to start thinking for themselves. The role earned Williams an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor and remains one of the most quoted performances of his career.
Mrs. Doubtfire followed four years later, with Chris Columbus directing Williams in a dual role as both divorced dad Daniel Hillard and the beloved British housekeeper he invents to stay close to his kids. The performance won Williams a Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy, and the film has stayed a family favorite ever since.
Both releases include HDR, a wider color spectrum, and immersive audio, and mark the first time either title has been available in 4K on digital platforms including Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, and Fandango at Home. Both films are also getting new key art for the release. Mrs. Doubtfire’s physical 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray goes a step further with dual cover art, showing Williams as Mrs. Doubtfire on the outer sleeve with a playful reveal of Daniel Hillard underneath.
