The Warrior Games are returning to Walt Disney World Resort in August 2027, and Fantasy Land News was on hand at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex yesterday when Disney made it official. This will mark the third time the adaptive sports competition has been hosted at Walt Disney World, following the 2022 and 2024 Games. Nearly 200 competitors are expected to take part across 12 adaptive sports, and Disney also used the event to introduce Adaptive Pickleball to the lineup, complete with an on-site demonstration.

Two of the Warrior Games’ longtime sponsors, Fisher House and the Wounded Warrior Project, spoke at the event, and their remarks were the most affecting part of the announcement. Fisher House, which provides housing support for wounded and recovering troops and their families, talked about how much these athletes need to feel like they are back in the field and part of something again. The Wounded Warrior Project described the camaraderie between service members as something these athletes have been missing since their injuries, and something the Games gives them back. For many of these athletes, it is less a competition and more a return to a version of themselves they feared they had lost.

Disney was in the middle of live broadcasts for ESPN8: The Ocho at Wide World of Sports yesterday, and the team still made a point of stopping to bring coverage to the Warrior Games announcement. It says a lot about where this event sits on Disney’s priority list, even in the middle of a packed broadcast day. It also marks the second time in two weeks the complex has made headlines for pickleball, following the Major League Pickleball Orlando finale we covered there in late July.

Disney’s commitment to service members shows up daily at Walt Disney World, not just during events like this one. As we’ve covered before, Magic Kingdom’s daily Flag Retreat ceremony includes an active or retired military member selected by cast members, and just a day before yesterday’s announcement, U.S. Army veteran Tony Smith was honored at that very ceremony despite the rain. Walt Disney World also offers military discount tickets on an ongoing basis, part of a legacy of support for the armed forces that traces back to Walt and Roy O. Disney’s own service in World War I.

The full 2027 Warrior Games schedule has not been released yet, and FLN will keep following this story as more details come out of ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex.
