Zootopia: Better Zoogether! is getting its first major update since opening at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, with a new preshow scene introducing Mayor Winddancer starting today, July 29, inside the Tree of Life Theater. Walt Disney Imagineering announced the change on social media with a behind-the-scenes look at the new scene alongside Story Lead David, and the character is voiced by Patrick Warburton, reprising his role from Zootopia 2.

The new scene plays at the very start of Zootopia: Better Zoogether!, right as guests are taking their seats inside the Tree of Life Theater for the Carrot Vision 3D presentation. Mayor Winddancer delivers a short speech kicking off the Zoogether Day celebration before the rest of the show, which follows Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde investigating what’s gone wrong with the citywide festivities, continues as before. Disney says the update reflects guest feedback that small additions could make the show more enjoyable, and the new scene adds only a few seconds to the show’s roughly nine minute runtime.
Mayor Brian Winddancer is a former actor turned politician who becomes Zootopia’s 54th mayor in Zootopia 2, succeeding both Leodore Lionheart and Dawn Bellwether. He quickly became one of the film’s most popular new characters, and Disney has pointed to that popularity as the reason the Imagineering and animation teams found a way to work him into the park show. Zootopia 2 opened in November 2025 and went on to become the highest grossing animated film of all time, crossing $1.7 billion worldwide.
Patrick Warburton has been part of Disney parks and animation for more than two decades. He has voiced the Chief Flight Attendant character in the Soarin’ preshow safety video at Epcot and Disney California Adventure since the attraction’s 2001 debut, a role he’s kept through the ride’s various versions including this year’s Soarin’ Across America. On the animation side, he’s best known to Disney fans as Kronk in The Emperor’s New Groove and its follow-ups, a role that made him a natural fit when Walt Disney Animation Studios cast Zootopia 2. Interestingly, Warburton had already filmed a Zootopia 2 promo in front of the Tree of Life around the time Better Zoogether opened last November, though Mayor Winddancer had no role in the attraction until now.
Zootopia: Better Zoogether! opened November 7, 2025, replacing the long-running It’s Tough to Be a Bug! inside the Tree of Life Theater, and adding new story content less than nine months later is a rare move for a show this new. Disney hasn’t said whether more changes are coming beyond the Winddancer scene, and it’s still unclear if this is a one-time addition or the start of the show evolving further alongside the Zootopia franchise.
