Julie Andrews is getting the definitive documentary treatment, and Disney+ will be the one to tell her story. A new film from director R.J. Cutler is set to premiere globally on the streamer in 2027, promising an intimate look at the woman behind decades of beloved roles. The film traces Andrews’ path from her early years in British vaudeville through her rise to global stardom. Disney describes her story as one shaped by resilience, heartbreak and reinvention, going well beyond her famous performances.
Andrews holds one of the highest honors Disney gives out. She was inducted as a Disney Legend in 1991, just four years into the program’s existence, and was only the second on-camera performer to receive the title. That induction came on the heels of her star-making role in “Mary Poppins,” the film that first introduced her to Disney audiences in 1964 and earned her an Academy Award.
Her ties to the company kept growing after that. She served as the official ambassador for Disneyland’s 50th anniversary celebration in 2005, narrated “Enchanted” in 2007 and returned to Walt Disney Studios years later for “The Princess Diaries” films, shot on the same soundstage as “Mary Poppins.” Disney later renamed that soundstage in her honor. With this new documentary, Andrews adds another chapter to a relationship with the company that has spanned more than six decades.
R.J. Cutler directs and produces, known for “Billie Eilish: The World’s A Little Blurry” and “Martha.” He is joined by producers Trevor Smith, Elise Pearlstein, Jane Cha Cutler and Jonathan Ruane, with Mark Blatty serving as executive producer. This Machine, part of Sony Pictures Television, produces the film. An official title has not been announced yet.
Cutler described the experience of interviewing Andrews as deeply personal, saying she let him into her inner world and reflected openly on the life she has shaped for so many others. He added that what he found went beyond the icon, calling her someone who gave him everything without holding back.
