Red and Chuck are ready to launch into their next adventure, and this time it comes with diapers attached. Paramount Pictures has released a new poster and full trailer for The Angry Birds Movie 3, confirming the franchise’s December 23 theatrical return after a seven year wait since The Angry Birds Movie 2.

The poster brings together the full extended Bird Island family under the tagline “One Big Angry Family,” with Red front and center surrounded by familiar faces and a few new ones in feathered formation. The trailer fills in the bigger picture: Jason Sudeikis returns as Red, who is no longer the hot-headed outcast from the first film. He is now a father of three, raising teenage daughter June, adventurous son Glider, and hatchling Olly alongside Silver, voiced by Rachel Bloom. Where the first two movies sent Red off to save Bird Island from outside threats, this one puts him through a different kind of gauntlet: actually raising kids.

Josh Gad and Danny McBride are back as Chuck and Bomb, this time pulling babysitting duty when Red needs backup, which based on the trailer happens often. Smosh’s Anthony Padilla and Ian Hecox return as Hal and Bubbles, and the cast expands considerably with Walker Scobell, Emma Myers, Keke Palmer, Lily James, Tim Robinson, Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, Nikki Glaser, Sam Richardson, Marcello Hernández, James Austin Johnson, Anna Cathcart, and social media personalities MrBeast and Salish Matter joining the flock.

John Rice, who previously co-directed The Angry Birds Movie 2, takes the director’s chair this time, while Thurop Van Orman moves to the writers’ room. Heitor Pereira returns to score the film, continuing his work across all three Angry Birds movies. DNEG Animation is handling animation and storyboarding, with Jeanie Chang as production designer.

Producer John Cohen called the voice cast an all-star comedic ensemble, while Paramount’s Marc Weinstock pointed to the franchise’s worldwide reach as the reason for bringing it to theaters. Flywheel Media’s Don McGregor noted this marks the company’s first theatrical distribution partnership.

Our Take: The fatherhood pivot is a smart move for a franchise that already proved it could clear half a billion dollars worldwide on slapstick alone. Aging up the core joke from “angry bird with a temper” to “angry bird trying not to embarrass his teenager” gives the series somewhere new to go instead of just repeating the save-the-island formula a third time, and the early trailer beats suggest the writers leaned into that rather than treating it as a gimmick.

The Angry Birds Movie 3 flies into theaters and RealD 3D on December 23.
