Disney+ to Launch Animated ASL Musical Sequences from Frozen II, Moana 2, and Encanto. Disney+ will release a new series of animated musical sequences reimagined in American Sign Language (ASL) on April 27. The project, titled Disney Animation’s Songs in Sign Language, coincides with National Deaf History Month and features three popular songs from recent Walt Disney Animation Studios films.
The collection includes new versions of “The Next Right Thing” (Frozen 2), We Don’t Talk About Bruno” (Encanto), and “Beyond” (Moana 2).
Director Hyrum Osmond led a team of over 20 animators to create these sequences. Rather than simply adding a signer to the corner of the screen, the team produced new animation for the characters themselves. They worked closely with Deaf West Theatre to ensure the performances were authentic.
A Deeper Connection Through Animation. The collaboration involved DJ Kurs, the artistic director of Deaf West Theatre, and a group of eight performers. Instead of translating the lyrics word-for-word, the team focused on the underlying concepts and emotions of each song. This approach allowed the characters to express the story through the natural flow of ASL.
Hyrum Osmond, who has a personal connection to the Deaf community through his father, noted that the project aims to remove communication barriers. He believes that animation is an ideal medium for showcasing the beauty of sign language.
DJ Kurs shared that Disney stories often serve as a common language for children worldwide. He expressed that seeing these characters adapt to ASL is a significant moment for the community, and hopes it inspires Deaf children everywhere.
Behind the Scenes. A special featurette will also debut on Disney+ alongside the songs. This documentary-style look provides a glimpse into the creative process, showing how the animators and the Deaf West Theatre team worked together to blend the art of animation with sign language choreography.
