Zootopia 2 Has 4th Biggest Box Office Opening of All Time with $556 Million Globally. Disney’s animated sequel, “Zootopia 2,” delivered a stunning performance at the box office, taking in an estimated $556 million globally in its opening weekend. This massive haul makes it the fourth-biggest opening weekend in movie history.
The film dominated the North American Thanksgiving holiday, earning a mighty $156 million since Wednesday. This is the second-best Thanksgiving debut of all time, trailing only Disney’s “Moana 2” ($225 million in 2024) and surpassing “Frozen II” ($125 million in 2019). The original 2016 “Zootopia” opened with $75 million and went on to earn $1.02 billion worldwide.
“Zootopia 2” was an even bigger force internationally, collecting an incredible $400 million. This was boosted by a record-setting $272 million in China alone, highlighting the sequel’s global appeal.
We had speculated in an earlier article, “The key to a potentially unprecedented worldwide opening lies in China, where the original Zootopia was a colossal success and where demand for the sequel is proving to be exceptional,” which came through with better-than-expected numbers. Even though we were wrong in thinking it could gain anywhere in the top 3, placing 4th is still a massive success for Walt Disney Animation and Walt Disney Studios.
