Disney Cruise Line rolled out the red carpet — and a boatload of drones — for the christening of its newest ship, the Disney Destiny, at Port Everglades Monday night.
The celebration was less a typical ceremony, more a high-energy spectacle: a concert-meets-theater production featuring a live band, vocal performers, and custom pop-rock arrangements of iconic music from Hercules, The Lion King, and even Marvel and Pirates of the Caribbean. The ship itself served as the ultimate projection screen.
The Disney Destiny joins the growing fleet as the third of the ‘Wish’ class, drawing inspiration from Disney, Pixar, and Marvel heroes and villains. It’s a literal floating ambassador for the entire Disney universe.
The Ship’s Godmother: Broadway star Susan Egan (voice of Meg in Hercules and Broadway’s original Belle) delivered the ceremonial blessing and a champagne pop to ready the ship for sea.
Josh D’Amaro and Joe Schott Speak at the Christening Celebration
“For more than 100 years, we have entertained our fans in new and innovative ways, connecting them to the Disney stories they love,” Josh said. Disney Cruise Line is a powerful part of that legacy because our ships become brand ambassadors that travel the globe and bring joy to our guests in ways only Disney can. Now, the Disney Destiny makes its own extraordinary entry into our growing fleet.”
Joe Schott, President of Disney Signature Experiences, lauded the team’s “expertise, creativity, and dedication to this beautiful ship.”
The ship is set to feature a Broadway-style Hercules show, themed dining inspired by The Lion King and Marvel, and lounges dedicated to iconic characters like Cruella de Vil and Doctor Strange.
The Destiny is a key piece in Disney Cruise Line’s significant expansion plans, which aim to grow the fleet to 13 ships by 2031, including a new class of ships and a Japan-based venture.
To mark the launch, Disney is also rolling out the “Discover Your Destiny” initiative in Florida and the Bahamas. The program brings Disney Cruise Line creative professionals into classrooms to inspire students with behind-the-scenes looks at entertainment careers.
The Disney Destiny sets sail on its maiden voyage on November 20, kicking off its inaugural season of four- and five-night cruises to The Bahamas and Western Caribbean from its new Fort Lauderdale homeport.
