We finally know who raised Nathan Grant, and she sounds like a lot of fun. Marilu Henner has joined the cast of When Calls the Heart Season 14 as Bernice “Birdie” Grant, Kevin McGarry’s free-spirited mother, and she is riding into Hope Valley on horseback right in time for a wedding.
Hallmark describes Birdie as a well traveled adventurer, most recently back from a church aid trip in Switzerland, who takes an instant liking to Elizabeth and pulls her into a hug on arrival. She would rather unwind with a schnapps and a cigar than sit through small talk, and she is optimistic, resourceful, and not above a little mischief. Her arrival lines up with the Nathan and Elizabeth wedding storyline fans have been waiting on for seasons.
Henner is no stranger to Hallmark, having previously played Aida Teagarden in the Aurora Teagarden Mysteries films. In a statement to People, she called the role personal, calling herself lucky to have “the fabulous and feisty Birdie” as a part and Elizabeth as her future daughter in law on screen. She has already started filming her scenes and described the cast as close knit and welcoming.
The news lands alongside Season 14’s other big story, Lori Loughlin’s return as Abigail Stanton, first previewed in that shocking Season 13 finale scene and confirmed when Hallmark renewed the series for Season 14. Our Take: Pairing a comedic pro like Henner with one of Hope Valley’s steadiest characters is a smart bit of casting. Nathan has always played it straight, so a mom who shows up on horseback ready for a cigar and a story is exactly the kind of contrast that tends to work on this show. Between Abigail’s return and a new character built around the wedding storyline, Season 14 is shaping up as an event season rather than a routine renewal.
