The Transformers: The Movie is coming back to theaters for its 40th anniversary, and Hasbro is calling it an “Apology Tour” for a reason.

Hasbro and Fathom Entertainment announced today that the beloved 1986 animated film will return to theaters nationwide in 4K beginning September 17, 2026, in honor of Transformers Day, with the run continuing through September 21. Select international markets are expected to launch day-and-date with the U.S. release. Tickets will go on sale later this summer through Fathom Entertainment and participating theater box offices.

The film that emotionally blindsided an entire generation is getting the full theatrical treatment, complete with the voice cast that made it legendary. Peter Cullen returns as Optimus Prime, Frank Welker as Megatron, Judd Nelson as Hot Rod and Rodimus Prime, Leonard Nimoy as Galvatron, Eric Idle as Wreck-Gar, Robert Stack as Ultra Magnus, and the late Orson Welles as the planet-devouring Unicron. Hasbro is also promising additional 40th anniversary surprises across toys, merchandise, and publishing alongside the theatrical run.

The “Apology Tour” framing is Hasbro leaning all the way into what everyone already knows. Optimus Prime’s death at the hands of Megatron remains one of the most talked-about moments in the history of animated film, and four decades later fans are still not entirely over it. The whole point of this release is to walk back into that theater, know exactly what is coming, and choose to sit through it anyway.

Our Take: This one is personal. We were in those theaters 40 years ago when this movie came out, and we were absolutely not prepared for what it did to us. We can still hear Leonard Nimoy’s voice as Galvatron, which hit different knowing him as Spock from Star Trek. Rodimus Prime still feels like a controversial choice. And if you know, you know the universal greeting: Bah-weep-Graaaaagnah wheep ni ni bong. Seeing this in 4K on a big screen in 2026 is going to be something. September cannot get here fast enough.
