The upcoming Villains Land at Magic Kingdom is getting a massive creative overhaul. According to a new report from The Wrap, Disney discarded its first plans for the expansion to build something bigger that can compete with Universal’s Epic Universe. The new plans may include The Emperor’s New Groove Roller Coaster, Maleficent Dark Ride, and a new Hades Dinner.

We have heard reports that Villains Land at the Magic Kingdom‘s original plans were not scrapped, but updated to be better. Which is not a bad thing. Until Disney actually announces this, we have to say this may be speculation!

The Emperor’s New Groove Roller Coaster

One of the biggest changes is the main roller coaster. While early art showed a dark thrill ride for Maleficent, The Wrap says the ride is now a family coaster similar to Slinky Dog Dash.

The new theme centers on the movie The Emperor’s New Groove. This makes sense for fans who remember Yzma and Kronk riding a coaster to get to their secret lab. Sources say the ride will include a moment where riders pull the lever. This change helps more guests ride because it lowers the height requirement.

Maleficent Leads a Massive New Ride

Maleficent is still the star of the land. According to The Wrap, Disney is turning its main attraction into a high-tech indoor water ride.

The scale of this experience should match huge hits like Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance. This move helps Disney justify selling a separate Lightning Lane pass for the ride, allowing it to make money for a long time.

Hades and Ursula Join the Land

The report highlights other new features:

  • Hades Dining Show: A sit-down dinner show with Hades plus Pain and Panic. This replaces an older plan for a restaurant based on The Rescuers.
  • Ursula Ride: A third ride should be a spinning attraction themed to Ursula from The Little Mermaid.
  • Epic Universe Influence: Designers are looking at the Isle of Berk at Epic Universe as a guide. They want the land to feel immersive but also bright and welcoming for families.

Timeline and Strategy

The report says Disney CEO Josh D’Amaro is leading these changes to make the land a major part of his legacy. This new direction might delay the project by a year. Current estimates suggest it will open in 2029.

Disney will likely share official news at the D23 event in Anaheim later this year.
