Robert Downey Jr. will serve as the official godparent for the Disney Adventure, the newest and largest ship in the Disney Cruise Line fleet. Disney announced the partnership today as the vessel prepares for its maiden voyage from Singapore next month. By joining this historic maritime tradition, the legendary actor will bless the ship and its passengers before it begins sailing across Southeast Asia.
“Our new ship continues the tradition of bringing great stories to life at sea,” said Josh D’Amaro, Chairman of Disney Experiences and incoming Chief Executive Officer of The Walt Disney Company. “We are honored that Robert Downey Jr. is the official godparent for the Disney Adventure.”
Downey played a central role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe for over a decade. His work as Tony Stark helped turn the series into a global phenomenon. Disney recognized his contributions by naming him a Disney Legend in 2019. He is set to return to the Marvel world as Doctor Doom in the upcoming film Avengers: Doomsday.
“It is an honor to be the godparent for this ship,” Downey said. “The Disney Adventure is massive, and a blessing of this size requires my best effort. I will do my part to make it special.”
The Disney Adventure features seven themed areas that celebrate a century of Disney stories. Marvel Landing sits on the top decks and includes the Ironcycle Test Run. This attraction is the first roller coaster on a Disney Cruise Line ship and the longest of its kind on any vessel.
Guests can also visit the Disney Imagination Garden to see the “Avengers Assemble!” live stage show. This production uses stunts and special effects to showcase a battle between heroes and villains. For younger guests, the Marvel WEB Workshop inside Disney’s Oceaneer Club offers a chance to test superhero suit prototypes and train with Avengers technology.
The ship provides a wide range of entertainment and hospitality options. Travelers can enjoy character meetings, Broadway-style theater, and themed rooms. The vessel also hosts more than 20 dining locations that serve international and Asian-inspired food and drinks.
The tradition of choosing a godparent for a ship is a long-standing custom. It is meant to bring good luck to the vessel and everyone on board before it starts its first official journey.
