Hallmark Channel 'Loveuary' Movie Review: 'Because of Cupid'

Loveuary rolled on, and Hallmark Channel put out another love-themed movie on Valentine’s Day. Loveuary is the yearly movie schedule for February on Hallmark Channel, with the emphasis on Valentine’s Day. ‘Because of Cupid’ premiered on Hallmark Channel on February 14th and is now available to stream on Hallmark+.

Last week, we were treated to the amazing, ‘The Way To You,’ and this week mostly kept up with it.

The premise of ‘Because of Cupid‘ is the story of Best friends Naomi and Marcus, who participate in a Valentine’s Day mocktail competition, but things go awry when Cupid interferes with a love potion that affects Marcus and several of their friends.

Because of Cupid – Our Review

Naomi is played by Amy Groening, and Marcus is played by Evan Roderick. Their chemistry is so fun. You can feel their friendship. I love that the song ‘Let Me Call You Sweetheart’ is the interwoven song. The writing of this story is engaging and keeps you interested. This is the second movie in a row with a ‘Ghost’ pottery scene. This one was more comical.

Evan says, “Lisa went on a romantic binge. Where would she go?” Naomi says, “She’d recreate her favorite movie scene.” They find her in her craft studio making pottery with E.J. Naomi tells them, “Don’t whats up, Swayze, where have you been?” Little comical nods go a long way with me. They even had a different version of ‘Unchained Melody’ playing.

For me, the star of the movie is Adam Tsekhman as Hal. He steals every scene he is in. I do believe that this is his first Hallmark Channel movie. But I would love to see him in more. He just charms!

Loveuary so far is two for two. I’d give this movie 4 out of 5 popcorn buckets. It does drag a bit in some scenes, but it delivers on all levels. This is a definite watch again.

Hallmark Channel ‘Because of Cupid’ Movie Recap:

Marcus and Naomi work as bartenders at Agora. Their boss is considering selling, and Naomi and Marcus really want to stop her until they can buy it. Naomi wants to bring in some more food options and more mocktails to the menu. Marcus and Naomi are best friends and “work husband and work wife.”

One night at the bar, they meet Hal and E.J., who had just been playing darts. E.J. turns out to be the author of a very popular fantasy romance book series (think ACOTAR). Naomi rushes to introduce him to her boss, Lisa. While E.J. is talking to Lisa and Naomi, Hal asks Marcus how long he’s been in love with Naomi because it’s obvious. Marcus says, since the day he met her.

Naomi makes Hal a mocktail, and he raves about it. Naomi tells him what is in it and explains she’s looking for a particular spice. Hal says he has it because he owns Eros Tea Cafe. He invites the duo to come by and get some. Meanwhile, they are putting together a plan to buy the Agora. Naomi suggests they go talk to Marcus’ uncle, Richard.

Uncle Richard is very hard on Marcus and doesn’t have much to offer. He tells them that they need to prove to each other and to Lisa that they should be the ones to buy the restaurant. He tells them to enter the mocktail competition that would prove to Lisa they are ready and would give them some money to buy an oven. Richard’s friend, Lucy, shows up and tries to convince Richard he needs to go to a singles mixer.

They head to Eros Tea Cafe and meet Hal. Hal gives them the vile he promised Naomi. While she’s on a call, Hal gives Marcus a love potion elixir. Marcus tries to reject it, and Naomi takes it, but thinks that it’s a melon and she’s allergic to it. We do find out that Naomi is into biochemistry and her greenhouse. At the Agora, Naomi makes a mocktail to serve to the sponsors of the Mocktail competition that Richard wants to get them in. What she doesn’t realize is that she dumps the whole love potion into the batch and pours out 7 drinks.

The seven drinks go to Marcus, Richard, Lucy, Stephen (the sponsor), Jane (Naomi’s yoga instructor), Lisa, and E.J. Everyone instantly falls in love. Hard and fast love. Lisa and E.J. want to see all their holdings and move to Costa Rica. Jane and Stephen fall madly in love. Richard and Lucy get together after 50 years. Marcus loses his inhibition and professes his love to Naomi.

Marcus confesses to Naomi that she just gave everyone a love potion. They need to find Hal and find an antidote. They go to Eros Tea Cafe, which is suddenly a nail salon. Everyone is informed that they took a love potion, but they don’t care; they are happy. Marcus and Naomi finally run into Hal again, who reveals that he’s actually Cupid, and he offers an antidote. They go on a journey to get the ingredients and convince everyone to take the antidote. One by one, they take it and get back to themselves. Jane and Stephen realize they aren’t in love and are good with it. Lisa and E.J. realize that they do want to pursue a relationship, but need to slow down. Richard and Lucy realize that they do, in fact, love each other and want to get married.

Hal tells Marcus that what he took was a placebo. The potion only works if two people take it, and Naomi never did. Their love for each other is the true thing. Marcus and Naomi finally admit their true love for each other at Richard and Lucy’s wedding. Naomi sings for Marcus just like he did on the night they took the potion.

Loveuary will continue next Saturday with ‘The Stars Between Us’ starring Sarah Drew and Matt Long. You can watch all the Loveuary movies across the years in a Loveuary collection on Hallmark+.
